“you should smile more”
Out of all the things men have ever said to me, one that i’ve heard a few too many times is “you should smile more,” or some form of that same comment. It has always been a man who has said it and he has always been a complete stranger.
This comment has always struck a nerve in me, more so than even the comments about my ass or the “f*** you, b*tch” I get when I don’t respond to their cat calls politely. It has always struck a nerve because it tells me one thing very clearly about that man.
He believes I owe him something.
This man, who has never met me - doesn’t even know my name - truly, in his heart of hearts, believes I owe him something.
a smile, in this case.
Men often believe women owe them things. A smile. A laugh at their joke. Modesty so they are not tempted. A conversation to entertain them and make them feel interesting. Caution so they are not to blame. Competence so they can be mothered. Birth control so they can enjoy themselves…
Somehow, it’s always on the woman. interesting how that works, isn’t it?
This series (inspired by dove cameron’s “breakfast”) is an artistic rendition of what the world might look like, if the roles were reversed. if men owed women all the women are told they owe men. This is what the world might look like if women ran the world the way that men have. The scenes in this series are a walk through a young man’s day in a corporate america run by women who do not value him the same as they value themselves. They take advantage of him simply because he is a man. His opinions are questioned, his ideas stolen; he is outnumbered and overlooked…until after hours. suddenly, he is interesting and enticing, maybe he shouldn’t have worn something like that knowing women were going to be there. How are any of them going to take him seriously at work once they realize he has a body under those clothes? How foolish of him to assume they could simply, control themselves??? And respect him??? Not dressed like that. Women will be women after all.
